This is one of two songs that I wrote while participating in a short-lived Christian songwriters forum on the internet. To provide some inspiration, the participants agreed on a common goal - for this song, the goal was to write a song inspired by Psalm 27.
I really wanted to contribute to and support this forum so I kept at this task even though I simply wasn't getting anywhere. I didn't know what I could possibly do with all the "my enemies" and "my foes" language. Ultimately, I sort of cheated. I took the psalm's first line - "the Lord is my light and my salvation" - and wrote a song about that with nothing more than snippets ("set me high upon a rock", "lead me in a straight path") from the rest of the scripture. So saying that the song was "inspired by Psalm 27" is a bit of a stretch.
(If I remember correctly, I was the only one who got as far as a demo recording of a song for this challenge. The forum shut down shortly thereafter.)
As I write this, I haven't yet done a final recording but I like the gospel-y feeling of this one and the energy in the break.
