Turn to Me
"Help me hear Your word"
Lyrics
Turn to me (as You do)
Have mercy on me (as You do)
Hold me in Your holy arms
As You do for all who love you
O Lord, my God
Help me hear Your word
I wander with hope in my heart
Longing for Your commands
O Lord, my God
Holy Shepherd above
Direct every fall of my feet
With the staff in Your hands
Make Your face shine upon this servant
Teach me Your decrees
I’m awaiting the word unfolding
Down upon my knees
I'm just seeking the understanding
To not be ruled by sin
Make Your face shine upon this servant
I will let You in
About this song
This song reminds us to invite God into our lives, not once but all the time. I like to think that you can't sing "turn to me, God" without first turning to Him.
The lyrics for the chorus come from a prayer I encountered in some study materials for a class we were taking. The prayer was lifted directly from a section of the acrostic Psalm 119. I returned to the same section for inspiration on the verses.
This is not a Christmas song but was written during the Christmas season. I suspect that has something to do with my heavy reliance on the shepherd/sheep analogy.
Chords
I do this in E and have chord charts in both D [click] and E [click].
Musically, the chords are simple (I - ii7 - IV - V) but it's fairly rhythmic with the intra-measure changes coming on the "and" of the second beat. The parenthetical "as You do" bits on the first two lines of the chorus are essential but could either be part of a call-and-response kind of thing or simply a part of the lead line.
